The other day while updating my facebook account, I received an instant message from someone saying hi. I didnt recognize this person as anyone that I knew personally so at first I did nothing. I thought to myself, “they must have the wrong person”, so I logged off.
When I logged on my Facebook later that day, I was greeted by a message from the same person. In the message she introduced herself to me and let me know which friend we had in common. She went on to tell me that she appreciated the work that I did.
After I logged off of Facebook, I thought to myself, “Now that’s how you introduce yourself to a stranger!”
We often follow people based on recommendations from Facebook. We never connect nor do we say hi. We may comment on a status but that’s the extent of the interraction. I often compare Social Media to stalking. Just like stalking, when you’re someone’s friend or follower you see what they’re doing, you see who they’re talking to and you know where they’re going. But if you watch their pages, and say nothing it’s as if you watching them thru a window and they don’t know you’re there.
The next time you follow or friend someone, introduce yourself. You would be surprised at what you may have in common. I’ve met some wonderful people online….people I consider friends. Open up those lines of communication. If you can be friends on facebook, you could at least say hello.
